Time Calculations

Fundamentals of Navigational Rallying | Interpretations of Roads | Ball & Arrow (Tulip) Navigation | Calibration | Calibration Runs | Route Classification

Proper timing is essential to rallying successfully. The following method shows how to determine if you are early or late during a rally. Before the start, synchronize your Clock Time to the official rally time posted by the start marshal. If possible, you should synchronize all the way down to the seconds.

  1. Normally, your Start Time will be your car's number added to the official start time of the rally.

  2. At the starting point, zero your car's Tripmeter or record the Odometer reading.

  3. Use the Average Speed given on your route sheet to calculate the Timing Factor as follows :
    Timing Factor = 60 / Average Speed

T his represents the number of minutes it would take you to travel each kilometer at the given Average Speed.

  4. To determine if you are running Early or Late during the rally:
  • Determine the Elapsed Distance by reading the tripmeter, or by subtracting your current
Odometer reading from your start reading.
  • Calculate your Elapsed Time as follows:

Elapsed Time = Elapsed Distance * Timing Factor
  • Derive your Calculated Time as follows:

Calculated Time = Elapsed Time + Start Time.

  • If your Calculated Time is earlier than Clock Time, then you are running late by the difference. If your Calculated Time is later than Clock Time, then you are running early by the difference.

Example

  • You are car #12 in a rally that started at 10:00 am.
  • At the start, your Odometer reading was 12345.6 km.
  • The Average Speed given on the Route Sheet is 20 kph.
  • Your Odometer now reads 12354.5 km and your Clock Time is now 10:40 am, are you early or late?

Solution:

  • Your Start Time is : 10:00 am + 12 = 10:12 am
  • Timing Factor = 60/20 = 3 minutes per kilometer.
  • Elapsed Distance is: 12354.5 - 12345.6 = 8.9 km
  • The Elapsed Time is: 8.9 x 3 = 26.7 min Note: Elapsed Times are rounded down to the minute.
  • The Calculated Time is: 10:12 + 26 = 10:38 am
  • Since Clock Time is 10:40 am, you are late by 2 minutes.
